Eventally all manufactured products reach their end-of-life and are disposed of, but Re>Pal pallets are able to be recycled and Re>Pal will buyback any damaged pallets. As in the initial manufacturing process, the end-of-life re-processing of Re>Pal pallets produces less greenhouse gas emissions than either injected-molded plastic or timber pallets.

Re>Pal vs Timber
The economics of pallets and logistics has already moved away from timber pallets. No longer does the abundant supply of timber – be it soft, medium, or hard wood, old growth or ‘sustainable’ new growth – make it the most suitable raw material for pallet manufacture.
The greenhouse gas emissions created in the production (felling, milling and transport) of timber pallets are significant – as are the impacts of deforestation: reduced carbon dioxide absorption capacity, increased risk of soil erosion and environmental damage. And typically in Indonesia, when timber pallets reach the end of their life, the broken slats are burnt.
The Plastic Problem
Globally, the legacy fleets of timber pallets are increasingly being replaced by plastic pallets. Most are made using injection molding, a process that is used to manufacture mesh–style plastic pallets and requires the use of standard-sized, single polymer feedstock. The preferred feedstock used in this process is usually (in order): virgin plastic, majority virgin plastic mixed with recycled plastics of the same polymer type, and finally very clean recycled mono-polymer plastic.
With annual global plastic production already over 450 million tonnes and forecasts for annual growth above 4.5%, there is no shortage of plastic. The greenhouse gas emissions from virgin plastic production are massive – EPA 2020 calculated: production of 1 tonne of plastic produces between 2 and 2.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases depending on the oil, the process and the plastic. Recycling just 10% of the 450 million tonnes of plastic produced, means the virgin plastic industry causes an additional 2,540 million tonnes of greenhouse gases each year.
The vast amount of plastic is incinerated often after being retrieved from waterways, the oceans or landfill. This incineration adds to the total emissions of greenhouse gas from virgin plastic production. EPA 2020 calculated: average emissions of between 2.9 and 4.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases from incinerating 1 tonne of plastic …. bringing the total emissions from production and incineration to between 5 and 7 tonnes of greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – for every tonne of virgin plastic.

Re>Pal's Thermofusion™ process was conceived more than 20 years ago as a solution to recycle polyethylene film and mix waste plastic. In 2012 a pilot plant was established in Bali and this was followed by the full-scale operation which opened in Pasuruan, East Java, in 2016.
